A Lesson from the blackout

On the 30th of December 2009 around 7pm our electricity went out because of the bad weather condition, we didn’t get our electricity back till the first of January. It wasn’t a pleasant experience but as children of God we learn from every experience we go through whether good or bad. The lessons I learnt from this experience is what I want to share with you today.

At the time of the blackout, my kids where upstairs playing in their room, across the hall from them was our bed room where their mum was and I was downstairs in the kitchen. The moment the lights went out all the kids started screaming because they are not use the darkness and also they were afraid of what they don’t know and can’t see. Their mum was quite, sensing the danger up there I started calling their names one by one and after each one responds they kept quite and remain calm.

The point is I didn’t have light myself but that didn’t matter to them what mattered to them was that they could hear a familiar voice in an unknown situation. By hearing my voice they have the assurance that I am with them or just a few steps away from them. Now I had to find a light to get to them but the good news is they were calmly waiting for me to get to them.

Isa 41:10 Do not fear; for I am with you; be not dismayed; for I am your God. I will make you strong; yes, I will help you; yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of My righteousness.

Even though we know the above scripture by heart, and also know ‘’Num 23:19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?’’ As humans we always need constant assurance that God is with us. By constant assurance I mean physical proof, especially when we find ourselves in unpleasant and uncommon situations. The proof that we‘ve been looking for is already in the bible so whether we see God physically or not, whether we hear him audibly or not, whether an angel drops down from heaven to speak to us or not, we know He is with us and He will never leave us.

If we have half the faith children have in their parents in God, our Christian life will be full of victories and testimonies of the goodness of God .

God loves you and that will never change no matter what you are going through right now, He doesn’t only show up when things are going on smoothly with you. He is always with you to help you and to strengthen you, even when it looks like you are all alone.
